Growing up in Bozeman, Montana, I started cycling at the age of 10. When I was 16 I joined the 5280 junior team run by Jonathan Vaughters, who is now CEO of EF Pro Cycling. I competed in my first Tour de France with the HTC-Highroad team in 2011 and earned the King of the Mountains jersey after stage 8, becoming the second American (after Greg LeMond!) to earn the jersey in the history of the Tour.
More about me
I later joined the BMC Racing Team, where I spent seven years, highlighted by a 5th place finish at the 2012 Tour de France where I won the young rider classification, a win at the Tour of California in 2013, and three top-10 finishes at Grand Tours, which I worked hard for and am very proud of. In 2019, I joined EF Pro Cycling, where I raced until my recent retirement from professional racing. Now, I'm excited to enter a new chapter with Team EF Coaching, helping other cyclists improve and grow in the sport.
When it comes to my coaching philosophy, I think this sums it up well: How ‘good’ you are at something isn’t pre-determined by birth. You can work to become better. When I was a kid in school I thought, "Those are the good athletes, and that's not me." In essence I told myself that others were talented and was just sort of average. There was a turning point though, and once I poured all my energy into really getting better, THAT is when I became "good". Am I talented? I have no clue. No test I’ve ever taken has suggested that I am. Did I work hard? You bet your ass I did. I promise, if you are willing to work hard, you will get better. The reason I love to coach is because I want to help other people realize that reality.
Now splitting time living in Colorado and California, I am the proud father of two girls and the husband to former pro cyclist and two-time National Champion Jessica Phillips.
